Subtraction
Meaning
Subtraction means to take away elements
to produce a difference.
Whole Numbers

The partial difference algorithm of subtraction breaks down the subtraction of place values. This allows the understanding of subtraction to achieve a deeper level. This algorithm would be a great option for students who are struggling with the traditional algorithm.
The decomposing algorithm allows students to break down the subtraction equation they are completing. It breaks down a bigger number into smaller numbers to make the subtraction seem less daunting. This method of subtraction is also a way for students to learn mental math skills.

Traditional subtraction is a widespread algorithm because of its efficiency it has. This algorithm cuts straight to the point and combines the knowledge of place value and regrouping. Traditional subtraction would be a great algorithm to teach students after they have understood other algorithms that break down subtraction.
Reflection
The knowledge of algorithms and subtraction methods has led to my understanding of the difficulties and challenges of teaching students subtraction. However, this course has allowed me to learn a multitude of ways in which I can teach subtraction. I am excited to use the lessons and activities I have completed in my future classroom.
Integers

The chip model relates to the meaning of subtraction because the chips are being taken away. This model allows students to visually take chips away to model subtracting.
Reflection
In this unit, I have learned how subtracting integers can be confusing for students and some of the best ways to ensure that my students are able to grasp the concept. The chip model is an excellent way to teach students how to subtract integers.
Fractions

The area model of subtraction is an excellent way for students to visualize subtracting two fractions. This model follows the compare principle and allows students to compare blocks from the fraction. Overall, this model is a helpful way to teach subtracting fractions.
Reflection
The subtraction of fractions is a concept that can become challenging when more concepts pile on top of it. The review was helpful for my understanding of subtraction of fractions and how it relates to the addition of fractions. This unit also gave me examples of fun lessons I can use/create for my students.
