Multiplication

Meaning

Multiplication means to multiply elements together to produce a product.

Whole Numbers

The lattice multiplication algorithm is a way for students to use visual aids to promote their multiplication understanding. This algorithm is confusing to understand at first; however, it becomes easier to understand after practice. This visual tool allows students to see what they are multiplying, then adding to get their product.

Partial products is an algorithm that breaks down multiplication into place values, making the steps easier to learn and understand. Students would be able to see how they are multiplying the elements in order to achieve the product. This algorithm would be a great choice for students who are new to multiplying.

The traditional multiplication algorithm is an effective and efficient way to multiply. It combines multiple necessary understandings needed to multiply. Overall, this method would be helpful for students who have mastered other multiplication algorithms first.

Reflection

Multiplication is a topic that makes me nervous and hesitant to teach. There are multiple components needed for students to truly learn how to multiply. After learning and exploring multiple algorithms, I feel more equipt and ready to teach. Partial products is my favorite algorithm because of how to breaks down the multiplication into smaller, more managable steps.

Integers

The chip model relates to the meaning of multiplication because students are able to repeatedly add or subtract chips. Students can draw out the chips to model adding or subtracting the groups.

Reflection

The chip model for multiplication is an amazing way to connect the ideas of addition, subtraction, and multiplication together. This unit helped me understand how to make that connection and how to explain it to students.

Fractions

This model shows the multiplication of fractions. It shows 2/3 of 1/4. The model creates an understanding of what the fractions represent and how you can find a part of another part (2/3 of 1/4). Using the model will help students.

Reflection

The multiplication of fractions unit allowed me to learn fun and simple ways to teach/explain multiplication to students. It provided a challenge when it came to explaining the multiplication in words. However, I was able to understand quickly.
