Division

Meaning

Division means to equal share or repeatedly subtract to produce a quotient.

Whole Numbers

Equal sharing division is an algorithm that allows students to use visuals to divide. This algorithm would be an excellent choice for teachers who are teaching division to students without any division knowledge. Students can divide their pictures to facilitate their understanding.

Partial quotients is an algorithm that requires a basic understanding of division. This algorithm would be a great stepping stone for students after they master division using pictures/visuals. The partial quotients break down the division based on students knowledge of multiples.

The traditional algorithm of division is a way for students to divide efficiently. This method has the potential to be confusing because of all of the elements it requires to understand. This algorithm would be good for students have have a vast knowledge of division.

Reflection

Division is content that I am the least excited to teach when it comes to math. Division is a confusing concept to explain to students and for students to understand. However, with the tips and tricks I have learned in this course, teaching division is a task I am excited to conquer.

Integers

The chip model relates to the meaning of division because the chips are being equally shared between groups to produce the quotient. This model is a simple and visual way for students to understand dividing with positive and negative integers.

Reflection

The chip method I learned in this unit divided integers very simply and easily to understand. This model will be amazing for students to use.

Fractions

In this array, 4/5 are being divided into 3 groups. The model allows students to visualize 4/5 and then split it into three groups. The division of a fraction by a whole number can be challenging without a model. Students will be able to use this model while they explore the concept.

Reflection

In this unit, I was able to develop my understanding of dividing fractions and how I can promote student understanding. I can see where students have a hard time learning and grasping the concept. I hope to use the knowledge I gained in this unit to help my students.
